In Medieval Times

Cyprus was a major stopping off point for those travelling to fight in the crusades, ships loaded with men, horses, armour and weapons would dock in Limassol port. Many of these visitors came not in peace, but as invaders, including King Richard the Lion heart who, with his knights and foot soldiers went on to build many of the castles and fortresses that helped protect the coastline from other foreign enemies coming ashore.
